The moodboard method.

A moodboard in progress, references and textures that shape a brand

People think an aesthetic is something you buy. You hire a designer, they hand you a vibe, done. But the strongest brands I've built started somewhere much simpler: a moodboard made by the founder, before any professional touched it.

Why? Because nobody can invent your taste for you. A designer can refine it, sharpen it, make it consistent. But the seed has to come from you. Here's the exact method I use with clients.

Step one: collect twenty saves

Open Pinterest or Instagram and save twenty things that make you stop scrolling. Don't overthink it and don't stay in your industry. Save interiors, outfits, album covers, packaging, nature. Taste doesn't care about categories.

Step two: find the thread

Lay them all out and look for what repeats. Maybe everything is warm and sunlit. Maybe it's all high contrast and bold type. Maybe there's green in nearly every frame. That repetition is your aesthetic talking to you. It was never missing. It was just scattered.

Your aesthetic isn't invented. It's collected, then named.

Step three: name it in three words

Now give the thread a name: three words, no more. Soft, earthy, elevated. Moody, botanical, gold. Clean, loud, playful. These three words become your filter for every future decision. Font feels off? Check it against the words. Post feels wrong? The words will tell you why.

Then test it

Show the board to three people who match your dream client. Ask one question: what kind of business does this feel like? If their answer sounds like yours, you've found it. If not, adjust before you spend a dollar on design.

Do this before you hire anyone, me included. You'll save money, the work will go faster, and the result will actually feel like you. That's the whole point.

The universe is your canvas.
